DO NOT DRIVE — Takata Airbag2006–2012 FusionFord Safety Recall 15S21 / 17S42 / 19S01 / 21S05
Takata Airbag Inflator Rupture — Active Do-Not-Drive Advisory
Ford has issued an active DO-NOT-DRIVE advisory for the remaining unrepaired 2006-2012 Ford Fusion vehicles equipped with non-desiccated Takata ammonium nitrate airbag inflators. The defect arises from propellant degradation after prolonged exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling — the Mississippi Gulf Coast climate is exactly the high-risk environment Takata identified. A degraded inflator may rupture during airbag deployment, sending sharp metal fragments toward vehicle occupants and resulting in serious injury or death. There have been 18 deaths and more than 400 injuries in the U.S. linked to Takata airbags so far. The do-not-drive advisory applies to vehicles with open recalls 15S21, 17S42, and 19S01. Recall 21S05 separately covers approximately 154,000 vehicles (including Fusion) where dealerships may have installed obsolete Takata replacement inflators during prior collision or theft repairs — these vehicles must be inspected to verify the airbag inflator is not from the obsolete supply.
Parts are now available. Customers can request mobile repair, or dealers will tow vehicles directly to the dealership for repair. Dealers will replace the driver and/or passenger frontal airbag inflator (or module and related components) free of charge. Free interim loaner vehicles are available. Astro Ford strongly encourages immediate VIN check and scheduling.

Brake Risk2013–2018 Fusion + MKZFord Safety Recall 23S12 (NHTSA 23V162)
Front Brake Hoses May Leak — Softer Braking and Longer Stopping Distance
On approximately 1.28 million 2013–2018 Ford Fusion and 2013–2018 Lincoln MKZ sedans built February 3, 2012 to July 19, 2017, due to inadequate testing during the design process, the front brake hoses may begin to leak due to normal steering and suspension travel. Significant suspension and steering input can cause the brake hose to rupture, causing brake fluid loss and increased brake pedal travel. Drivers may notice the brake fluid warning indicator light illuminate. The vehicles are equipped with two isolated brake circuits, allowing safe stopping if only one circuit is leaking, but a leaking front brake hose can extend stopping distance and require greater pedal effort — substantially increasing the risk of a crash. Recall 23S12 was the second related recall on the same population (a 2020 recall preceded it).
Dealers replace both front brake hoses with hoses made from stronger material and modify hose routing/ride-height sensor if equipped, free of charge. Reimbursement is available for owners who paid for repairs prior to the recall announcement. Owner notification letters mailed June 27, 2023.

Rollaway Risk2013–2016 Fusion (and Escape)Ford Safety Recall 18S20 / 19S16
Transmission Shifter Cable Bushing May Detach — Vehicle Rollaway Risk
On certain 2013–2016 Ford Fusion vehicles equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions (along with 2013–2014 Escape and the broader 2013–2019 Escape, 2013–2018 C-Max, 2013–2016 Fusion, 2013–2021 Transit Connect, 2015–2018 Edge population), the bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and detach from the transmission. This condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to "Park" and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not actually be in Park — with no warning message or audible chime. If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly roll, increasing the risk of a crash. Ford initially recalled 259,182 Fusion sedans with the 2.5L engine for related cable failure issues. Recall 19S16 expanded the original 18S20.
Dealers replace the under hood shift cable bushing and add a protective cap over the bushing, free of charge. Until repair is complete, owners are directed to use the parking brake every time. Recall 19S16 began September 10, 2019.

Steering Risk2014–2018 Fusion + MKZFord Safety Recall (Steering Wheel Bolt)
Steering Wheel May Separate from Steering Column — Loss of Steering Control
On certain 2014–2018 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles, the steering wheel attachment bolt may loosen over time, allowing the steering wheel to separate from the steering column. NHTSA began investigating complaints of loose steering wheels in October 2017 after one owner reported their steering wheel actually fell off while attempting to make a turn. The defective steering wheel attachment was implicated in two accidents and one injury before the recall was issued. Loss of steering control while driving substantially increases the risk of a crash and is one of the most consequential mechanical failures possible in a passenger vehicle.
Dealers replace the steering wheel attachment bolt with an updated, longer bolt with thread-locking compound, free of charge.

Rollaway Risk — Sun Belt2014–2015 Fusion + MKZ + 2015 MustangFord Safety Recall 22S02
Brake Pedal Bumper May Disintegrate from Heat/Humidity — Brake Lights Stuck On, Rollaway Risk
On certain 2014–2015 Ford Fusion, 2014–2015 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 Mustang vehicles originally sold or ever registered in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Hawaii, exposure to certain environmental conditions (high temperatures, high humidity, salt air) can cause the brake pedal bumper to disintegrate and separate from the brake pedal. A separated brake pedal bumper can cause the brake lights to illuminate continuously, causing confusion to other drivers, AND on automatic transmission vehicles, a missing brake pedal bumper can allow the driver to shift the vehicle out of Park without depressing the brake — allowing rollaway. Mississippi Gulf Coast owners are directly in the recall scope.
Dealers replace the brake pedal bumpers and clutch pedal bumpers, free of charge. Interim notification letters mailed March 4, 2022; main owner notification letters mailed June 13, 2022.

Injury Risk — Door Latch Lineage2013–2016 Fusion (and others)Ford Safety Recall 15S16 / 20S15 / 20S30
Side Door Latches May Break — Doors May Open While Driving
On certain 2013–2016 Ford Fusion vehicles (along with 2011–2014 Fiesta, 2014–2015 Mustang, 2013–2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012–2015 Focus, 2014–2016 Transit Connect, 2013–2014 Lincoln MKZ, 2014–2016 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC), a component within the side door latches may break, making doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or passenger to believe a door is securely closed when in fact it is not. Initial recall 15S16 covered approximately 390,000 vehicles. Recall 20S15 specifically targeted 2014–2016 Fusion + MKZ + 2014–2015 Fiesta vehicles sold or registered in 17 hot/humid Sun Belt states (including Mississippi) plus territories. Recall 20S30 is a "fix the fix" correction for vehicles previously repaired under 15V-246, 16V-643, or 17V-210.
Dealers replace all four door latches with an improved part, free of charge. For 20S30, dealers inspect latch date codes to confirm if prior repair was correct. Owner notification letters for 20S15 expansion mailed December 20, 2023.

Fire Risk2013–2014 Fusion + Fiesta ST/Escape/Transit ConnectFord Safety Recall 17S09
1.6L EcoBoost Cylinder Head May Overheat, Crack, and Leak Oil — Fire Risk
On certain 2013–2014 Ford Fusion vehicles equipped with the 1.6L GTDI EcoBoost engine (along with 2014 Escape, 2014–2015 Fiesta ST, and 2013–2015 Transit Connect), if the vehicle is started and driven with insufficient coolant within the engine cooling system, the engine cylinder head may overheat, crack, and leak oil. If the cylinder head cracks and leaks oil, the oil may contact a hot engine or exhaust component, increasing the risk of a fire. The 1.6L EcoBoost was the subject of an extended Ford engineering investigation across multiple model lines for fire risk.
Dealers install a coolant level sensor and supporting hardware/software, free of charge. The sensor warns the driver if coolant level drops below safe operating level, preventing the overheat condition. Recall began January 5, 2018.

Fusion Recall FAQs

Common questions about Ford F-150 recalls, your rights as an owner, and what to do next.

How do I check if my Fusion has an open recall?

The fastest and most accurate method is to enter your 17-character VIN into the checker at the top of this page, which queries the NHTSA database in real time. You can also check directly at nhtsa.gov/recalls or Ford's own recall tool at ford.com/support/recalls-details.

Your VIN is found on the lower left corner of your windshield (visible from outside), on your driver's door jamb sticker, or on your registration and insurance documents.

Are Ford Fusion recall repairs free?

Yes — all safety, compliance, and emissions recalls are repaired at no cost to you. Parts and labor are covered by Ford through any authorized Ford dealership, regardless of whether you are the original owner or purchased the truck used.

If you previously paid out of pocket to fix an issue that was later tied to a recall, you may be eligible for a refund. Ask your Ford dealer or contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 for reimbursement details.

Do Ford Fusion recalls ever expire?

Safety, compliance, and emissions recalls do not expire. Ford is required by federal law to repair these defects free of charge regardless of the vehicle's age or mileage, and regardless of how many owners the truck has had.

Customer Satisfaction Programs (which are separate from safety recalls) may have time and mileage limitations. If you are unsure whether something is a safety recall or a CSP, ask your dealer or check NHTSA.gov — only official safety recalls appear in the NHTSA database.

Can I still drive my Fusion if it has an open recall?

It depends on the severity. Most recalls allow you to continue driving while awaiting a repair appointment — the risk is present but not immediate. However, some recalls carry a "Do Not Drive" or "Park It Outside" warning from NHTSA, meaning the vehicle poses an immediate safety risk and should not be operated until repaired.

Always read the full recall description for your specific truck. If in doubt, contact Astro Ford or Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 for guidance specific to your VIN.

How will I be notified about a recall?

Ford is required by law to mail notification letters to all registered owners of affected vehicles once a recall is announced and VINs are confirmed. These letters identify the defect, the safety risk, and instructions for getting the repair done.

You can also proactively sign up for alerts through the free NHTSA SaferCar app or via Ford's recall notification sign-up. Because mailing lists depend on vehicle registration, used truck buyers may not always receive letters — this is why checking your VIN directly is important.

Which Fusion model years have the most recalls?

Based on NHTSA data, the most urgent Fusion recall is the active Takata airbag DO-NOT-DRIVE advisory affecting 2006–2012 Ford Fusion vehicles with non-desiccated Takata ammonium nitrate airbag inflators (recalls 15S21, 17S42, 19S01). Recall 21S05 separately covers approximately 154,000 vehicles where dealerships may have installed obsolete Takata replacement inflators during prior repairs. Customers should NOT drive 2006–2012 Fusion vehicles with open Takata recalls until the airbag inflator has been replaced.

The 2013–2018 Fusion (and Lincoln MKZ) is covered by the 23S12 front brake hose leak recall affecting approximately 1.28 million vehicles. The 2013–2016 Fusion is covered by the 18S20 / 19S16 transmission shifter cable bushing rollaway risk recall. The 2014–2018 Fusion + MKZ is covered by the steering wheel attachment bolt recall (steering wheel may separate from steering column).

The 2014–2015 Fusion + MKZ + 2015 Mustang sold or registered in 10 hot/humid states including Mississippi is covered by the 22S02 brake pedal bumper recall. The 2013–2016 Fusion is also covered by the 15S16 / 20S15 / 20S30 door latch lineage. The 2013–2014 Fusion 1.6L EcoBoost is covered by the 17S09 cylinder head overheat / oil leak fire-risk recall.

The Ford Fusion was discontinued in North America after 2020, but Astro Ford continues to perform free safety recall service on all Fusion vehicles. Always run your specific VIN at NHTSA.gov.

What's the difference between a recall and a Customer Satisfaction Program?

A safety recall is a federally mandated action where Ford must fix a confirmed safety defect at no cost, with no expiration date. These are filed with NHTSA and appear in the official recall database.

A Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP) is a voluntary Ford initiative to address quality issues that do not rise to the level of a federal safety recall. CSPs often have expiration dates and mileage limits, and they do not appear on NHTSA.gov. Your Ford dealer can check your VIN for any open CSPs when you bring your truck in for service.

How long does a recall repair take at the dealership?

It varies widely by the nature of the recall. A simple software update — whether dealer-applied or delivered over the air — can often be completed in under an hour. More involved repairs like replacing a brake booster, rear axle assemblies, or engine components may require several hours or a parts order if inventory is limited.

When you schedule your recall appointment at Astro Ford, our service team can give you an estimated completion time based on the specific recall and parts availability.

Can a recall affect my Fusion's resale value?

An open, unrepaired recall can negatively affect resale value, and in some states dealers are legally prohibited from selling a vehicle with an unrepaired safety recall. Getting recalls repaired promptly — and keeping documentation — actually protects your truck's value.

A completed recall has no negative impact on resale value, and in many cases demonstrates that the vehicle has been properly maintained. Always provide recall repair documentation when selling your F-150.

Does Astro Ford handle recall repairs?

Yes. As an authorized Ford dealership, Astro Ford performs all Ford safety recall repairs at no charge to you, using genuine Ford parts and factory-trained technicians. You do not need to have purchased your truck from us — any Ford dealer can complete your recall repair.

Call us or schedule your recall appointment online and mention your recall campaign number when booking. Our service team will verify your VIN and confirm parts availability before your visit.
