Frequently Asked Questions
- How often should I change the oil on a Ford Fusion?EcoBoost Fusions (2013+) require full synthetic SAE 5W-30 oil, guided by the IOLM at 7,500 to 10,000-mile intervals. The 2.5L naturally aspirated engine can use synthetic blend at similar intervals. Earlier Fusions (2006-2012) with the 2.3L or 3.0L V6 typically follow 5,000 to 7,500-mile intervals with conventional or synthetic blend oil.
- Does the Fusion Hybrid or Energi need special maintenance? The Fusion Hybrid and Energi share most maintenance items with gas models. Additional items include high-voltage battery coolant checks and regenerative brake system inspections. Brake pads last significantly longer due to regenerative braking. The Energi PHEV also benefits from periodic charging port inspection and cleaning.
- When should the transmission fluid be changed? The 6-speed automatic on most Fusions is considered a sealed unit with fluid inspection at 150,000 miles under normal conditions. Some 2012-2016 Fusions with the 1.5L or 1.6L EcoBoost used a dual-clutch PowerShift transmission that had known reliability issues and may benefit from more frequent fluid attention.
- What are common maintenance concerns on a Fusion? The most reported items vary by generation. 1st-gen Fusions (2006-2012) are generally reliable with standard maintenance. 2nd-gen models with the 1.5L EcoBoost may experience coolant intrusion issues around 60,000-100,000 miles. Regular coolant system checks and using genuine Motorcraft coolant help prevent issues.
