Engine Failure / Drive Power Loss2018–2022 EcoSport (1.0L EcoBoost) + 2016–2018 FocusFord Safety Recall 23S64 (NHTSA 23V-905)
Oil Pump Drive Belt Tensioner Arm May Fracture — Engine Damage, Drive Power Loss, Brake Assist Loss
On certain 2018–2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles built April 3, 2017 to October 12, 2021 and equipped with the 1.0L Fox EcoBoost three-cylinder engine and 6F15 automatic transmission (along with 2016–2018 Ford Focus built March 24, 2015 to May 4, 2018), the engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm may fracture or separate from the tensioner backing plate, and/or the oil pump drive belt material may degrade and lose teeth, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure. The 1.0L Fox EcoBoost uses an unusual wet-belt-in-oil oil pump drive design where the toothed belt runs in the engine oil — when the belt deteriorates, debris can clog the oil pickup screen leading to oil starvation, engine damage, and engine seizure. Loss of engine oil pressure can result in engine damage and/or seizure, loss of motive power, and loss of the mechanical vacuum pump required to provide power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash. The instrument cluster will display a low-oil-pressure warning message and may also display a check engine light. Drivers may hear loud noises from the engine, and continuing to drive after the warning may result in further power reduction or full engine failure. NHTSA opened an investigation in September 2023 after multiple reports of engine failures.
Dealers replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt with redesigned parts, free of charge. If engine failure has already occurred due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the entire engine assembly (long block engine and turbocharger) as an interim repair before the availability of final remedy parts — this is free of charge including parts and labor. Eligible owners can also receive rental vehicle reimbursement during the long repair window. Owner notification letters mailed August 11, 2025. Final remedy parts began availability Q1 2025.

Drive Power Loss + Rollaway Risk2021–2022 EcoSportFord Safety Recall (Front Axle Half Shaft)
Front Axle Half Shafts May Disconnect from Transmission — Loss of Drive Power and Rollaway Risk
On certain 2021–2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles built April 1, 2021 to July 20, 2022, the front axle half shafts may disconnect from the transmission, which can result in a loss of drive power. A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash. In addition, a disconnected half shaft can result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied — even with the transmission selector in the "Park" position, the disconnected half shaft means the parking pawl in the transmission no longer prevents wheel rotation. This is the same dual-hazard mechanism (drive power loss while driving + rollaway when parked) seen in the Ford Flex 14S10 recall.
Dealers inspect and replace the half shafts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters mailed May 29, 2025. Until repair is complete, owners are directed to use the parking brake every time the vehicle is parked.

Crash Injury Risk — FMVSS 207/2102019 EcoSportFord Safety Recall 18C08
Front Seat Frames Improperly Welded — Seat Back Improperly Secured
On certain 2019 Ford EcoSport vehicles, the front seat frames may have been improperly welded, resulting in the seat back being improperly secured. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207 "Seating Systems" and FMVSS number 210 "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages." A loose seat back can increase the risk of injury in a crash — the seat back is a critical safety component because it serves as the seatbelt anchorage point and must remain rigid during a crash to allow the seatbelt and airbag systems to function as designed. An unsecured seat back can fail rearward in a frontal impact (allowing rear-seat occupants to become unprotected) or fail forward in a rear impact (causing the front-seat occupant to be ejected against the windshield or front structure).
Dealers replace the front seat assemblies, free of charge. Recall began May 8, 2019.

Visibility Risk2020–2021 EcoSport (and many others)Ford Safety Recall 25S72
Rearview Camera Software Error — Blank Image or Image Persists After Reverse
On certain 2020–2021 Ford EcoSport vehicles (along with 2018–2022 Transit Connect, 2019–2020 MKZ, MKX, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, Fusion, 2019–2023 Ranger, Mustang, Expedition, Navigator, 2020–2022 Escape, F-250 SD, Corsair, 2020–2023 Aviator, Transit, 2020–2024 Explorer, 2021–2024 Bronco Sport, 2022–2024 Maverick), a software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended. A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both situations can increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters mailed September 4, 2025.

Compliance — Brake Reservoir Label2018 EcoSport (US Federal Territories)Ford Safety Recall (US Federal Territory Label)
2018 EcoSport Sold in U.S. Federal Territories Shipped with European Labeling
On certain 2018 Ford EcoSport vehicles sold in the United States Federal Territories (such as Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico), the vehicles were shipped with the European brake reservoir pictogram cap label and the European English language owner's manual kits. The vehicles do not meet U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requirements for proper brake fluid type identification labeling. Without correct U.S.-spec labeling, owners or service technicians may use the wrong brake fluid type, which can compromise braking system performance.
Dealers replace the brake reservoir cap label and provide the correct U.S. English-language owner's manual kit, free of charge.

Engine Stall + Brake Loss2018–2022 EcoSport + 2016–2018 Focus (1.0L)Earlier Oil Pump Drive Belt Recall (Pre-23S64)
Earlier Oil Pump Drive Belt Failure — Engine Stall and Loss of Power Brake Assist
Prior to the comprehensive 23S64 recall, NHTSA had identified a related oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner failure issue covering the same 2018–2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles and 2016–2018 Ford Focus vehicles. The earlier campaign described oil pump drive belt or tensioner failure resulting in loss of engine oil pressure, engine stall, and loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash. The 23S64 recall (issued January 2024 with NHTSA 23V-905) consolidated and expanded the earlier remediation by formally authorizing engine assembly replacement as an interim repair before final tensioner parts became available. EcoSport owners experiencing engine warnings or noises should treat both campaign references as the same underlying issue.
Affected vehicles are now covered under the comprehensive 23S64 remedy described in the top card. Dealers replace the oil pump tensioner assembly, drive belt, and (where engine damage has occurred) the entire long block engine assembly free of charge. Owners may submit reimbursement requests for prior owner-paid repairs through their dealership.

Important — 1.0L vs 2.0L Distinction2018–2022 EcoSport (Engine-Specific)Owner Awareness
Critical Engine-Specific Recall Awareness — The 1.0L Fox EcoBoost vs 2.0L Ti-VCT Question
EcoSport owners must understand a critical distinction: the highest-priority recall (23S64 oil pump drive belt tensioner) only affects vehicles equipped with the 1.0L Fox EcoBoost three-cylinder engine — which was paired with front-wheel drive only. The 2.0L Ti-VCT four-cylinder engine, which came standard with all-wheel drive (4WD), uses a completely different oil pump drive design and is not affected by 23S64. To determine which engine is in your EcoSport: (1) check the badge on the rear hatch (1.0L EcoBoost vehicles wear specific badging), (2) check the door jamb VIN tag for engine code, (3) verify the drivetrain (FWD = 1.0L, AWD/4WD = 2.0L), or (4) most reliably, run your specific 17-character VIN at NHTSA.gov to see all open recalls assigned to your specific vehicle. Owner forum discussions confirm that 1.0L EcoBoost EcoSport owners on the Mississippi Gulf Coast have experienced complete engine failures requiring full long block engine replacement — this is exactly what the interim repair authorization in 23S64 covers.
Astro Ford service department can run VIN-specific recall verification, identify whether your EcoSport has the 1.0L or 2.0L engine, and schedule the appropriate recall service including full engine assembly replacement under 23S64 if engine damage has already occurred.

EcoSport Recall FAQs

Common questions about Ford F-150 recalls, your rights as an owner, and what to do next.

How do I check if my EcoSport has an open recall?

The fastest and most accurate method is to enter your 17-character VIN into the checker at the top of this page, which queries the NHTSA database in real time. You can also check directly at nhtsa.gov/recalls or Ford's own recall tool at ford.com/support/recalls-details.

Your VIN is found on the lower left corner of your windshield (visible from outside), on your driver's door jamb sticker, or on your registration and insurance documents.

Are Ford EcoSport recall repairs free?

Yes — all safety, compliance, and emissions recalls are repaired at no cost to you. Parts and labor are covered by Ford through any authorized Ford dealership, regardless of whether you are the original owner or purchased the truck used.

If you previously paid out of pocket to fix an issue that was later tied to a recall, you may be eligible for a refund. Ask your Ford dealer or contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 for reimbursement details.

Do Ford EcoSport recalls ever expire?

Safety, compliance, and emissions recalls do not expire. Ford is required by federal law to repair these defects free of charge regardless of the vehicle's age or mileage, and regardless of how many owners the truck has had.

Customer Satisfaction Programs (which are separate from safety recalls) may have time and mileage limitations. If you are unsure whether something is a safety recall or a CSP, ask your dealer or check NHTSA.gov — only official safety recalls appear in the NHTSA database.

Can I still drive my EcoSport if it has an open recall?

It depends on the severity. Most recalls allow you to continue driving while awaiting a repair appointment — the risk is present but not immediate. However, some recalls carry a "Do Not Drive" or "Park It Outside" warning from NHTSA, meaning the vehicle poses an immediate safety risk and should not be operated until repaired.

Always read the full recall description for your specific truck. If in doubt, contact Astro Ford or Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 for guidance specific to your VIN.

How will I be notified about a recall?

Ford is required by law to mail notification letters to all registered owners of affected vehicles once a recall is announced and VINs are confirmed. These letters identify the defect, the safety risk, and instructions for getting the repair done.

You can also proactively sign up for alerts through the free NHTSA SaferCar app or via Ford's recall notification sign-up. Because mailing lists depend on vehicle registration, used truck buyers may not always receive letters — this is why checking your VIN directly is important.

Which EcoSport model years have the most recalls?

Based on NHTSA data, the most significant EcoSport recall is the 23S64 / NHTSA 23V-905 oil pump drive belt tensioner recall affecting 2018–2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles built April 3, 2017 to October 12, 2021 and equipped with the 1.0L Fox EcoBoost three-cylinder engine and 6F15 automatic transmission (FWD only). The 23S64 recall also covers 2016–2018 Ford Focus 1.0L EcoBoost vehicles.

The 1.0L Fox EcoBoost uses a wet-belt-in-oil oil pump drive design where the toothed belt runs in engine oil; when the belt deteriorates, debris can clog the oil pickup screen leading to oil starvation, engine damage, and engine seizure. Ford has authorized dealers to replace the entire long block engine assembly as an interim repair if engine failure has already occurred.

The 2021–2022 EcoSport built April 1, 2021 to July 20, 2022 is covered by the front axle half shaft disconnect recall (drive power loss + rollaway risk) with owner notification letters mailed May 29, 2025. The 2019 EcoSport is covered by the 18C08 FMVSS 207/210 front seat frame improperly welded recall. The 2020–2021 EcoSport is covered by the broader 25S72 multi-model rearview camera software recall. The 2018 EcoSport sold in U.S. Federal Territories was covered by the European labeling non-compliance recall.

CRITICAL: The 23S64 oil pump recall ONLY affects vehicles with the 1.0L EcoBoost engine (FWD only) — vehicles with the 2.0L Ti-VCT engine (4WD) use a different oil pump design and are not affected by 23S64. Always run your specific VIN at NHTSA.gov to confirm which recalls apply to your specific EcoSport.

The Ford EcoSport was discontinued in North America (and globally) after 2022, but Astro Ford continues to perform free safety recall service on all EcoSport vehicles.

What's the difference between a recall and a Customer Satisfaction Program?

A safety recall is a federally mandated action where Ford must fix a confirmed safety defect at no cost, with no expiration date. These are filed with NHTSA and appear in the official recall database.

A Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP) is a voluntary Ford initiative to address quality issues that do not rise to the level of a federal safety recall. CSPs often have expiration dates and mileage limits, and they do not appear on NHTSA.gov. Your Ford dealer can check your VIN for any open CSPs when you bring your truck in for service.

How long does a recall repair take at the dealership?

It varies widely by the nature of the recall. A simple software update — whether dealer-applied or delivered over the air — can often be completed in under an hour. More involved repairs like replacing a brake booster, rear axle assemblies, or engine components may require several hours or a parts order if inventory is limited.

When you schedule your recall appointment at Astro Ford, our service team can give you an estimated completion time based on the specific recall and parts availability.

Can a recall affect my EcoSport's resale value?

An open, unrepaired recall can negatively affect resale value, and in some states dealers are legally prohibited from selling a vehicle with an unrepaired safety recall. Getting recalls repaired promptly — and keeping documentation — actually protects your truck's value.

A completed recall has no negative impact on resale value, and in many cases demonstrates that the vehicle has been properly maintained. Always provide recall repair documentation when selling your F-150.

Does Astro Ford handle recall repairs?

Yes. As an authorized Ford dealership, Astro Ford performs all Ford safety recall repairs at no charge to you, using genuine Ford parts and factory-trained technicians. You do not need to have purchased your truck from us — any Ford dealer can complete your recall repair.

Call us or schedule your recall appointment online and mention your recall campaign number when booking. Our service team will verify your VIN and confirm parts availability before your visit.
