Notable GT Recalls to Know

Recalls affecting Ford GT owners across both generations — though as a low-volume halo supercar (4,038 first-gen units 2005–2006 plus 1,350 second-gen units 2017–2022, total ~5,388 lifetime units), the GT has fewer total recalls than mainstream Ford vehicles. The most urgent issue is the active Takata airbag DO-NOT-DRIVE advisory covering first-generation GTs (originally regional, expanded nationwide; current 2024 advisory under recalls 15S21, 17S42, 19S01). The 21S05 obsolete Takata replacement inflator recall covers first-generation GTs that may have received obsolete replacement parts during prior collision/theft repairs. The 18S29 second-generation rear wing valve block hydraulic fluid leak recall affects 176 U.S. units of the 2017–2018 GT. Verified from NHTSA Part 573 reports, Ford safety bulletins, and reputable industry sources. Always check your specific VIN above; collector-grade vehicles that sit unused are still subject to Takata propellant degradation regardless of mileage.

DO NOT DRIVE — Takata Airbag2005–2006 Ford GT (1st generation)Ford Safety Recall 15S21 / 17S42 / 19S01
Takata Airbag Inflator Rupture — Active Do-Not-Drive Advisory
Ford has issued an active DO-NOT-DRIVE advisory for the remaining unrepaired 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles equipped with non-desiccated Takata ammonium nitrate airbag inflators (driver and passenger). The defect arises from propellant degradation after prolonged exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling — the Mississippi Gulf Coast climate is exactly the high-risk environment Takata identified. A degraded inflator may rupture during airbag deployment, sending sharp metal fragments toward vehicle occupants and resulting in serious injury or death. NHTSA has confirmed 27 deaths and more than 400 injuries linked to Takata airbags in the U.S. The do-not-drive advisory applies to vehicles with open recalls 15S21, 17S42, and 19S01, originally expanded from regional (FL, PR, HI, USVI) to nationwide for 2005-2006 GT and 2005-2008 Mustang. This applies even to low-mileage collector-grade vehicles — Takata propellant degrades over time regardless of how often the vehicle is driven.
Parts are now available. Customers can request mobile repair, or dealers will tow vehicles directly to the dealership for repair. Dealers replace the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators, free of charge. Free interim loaner vehicles are available. Astro Ford strongly encourages immediate VIN check and scheduling for any 2005-2006 GT.

Takata — Obsolete Replacement Inflators2005–2006 GT (and other Ford lines)Ford Safety Recall 21S05
Obsolete Takata Replacement Inflators May Have Been Installed During Prior Repairs
In February 2021, Ford recalled approximately 154,000 vehicles, including 2005-2006 Ford GT (along with 2004-2011 Ranger, 2007-2010 Edge / Lincoln MKX, 2008-2012 Fusion, 2009-2011 Mercury Milan, 2010-2012 Lincoln MKZ, and 2005-2014 Mustang), because dealerships may have installed obsolete Takata replacement inflators during prior collision or theft repairs. Ford identified 1,117 specific vehicles where dealer records confirmed an obsolete inflator was installed, and recalled 153,107 additional vehicles to verify. The "obsolete" Takata service parts may have remained on dealership shelves even after they should have been disposed of as part of the broader Takata recall remediation. For 2005-2006 GT owners who have had any prior collision repair, theft recovery, or airbag-related service work, this recall is critical to verify.
Dealers inspect vehicle records and the airbag inflator part numbers to determine whether an obsolete Takata replacement inflator was installed during prior repairs. If an obsolete inflator is identified, it is replaced with a new, non-Takata inflator, free of charge.

Fire Risk2017–2018 GT (2nd generation)Ford Safety Recall 18S29 (NHTSA 18V-707)
Rear Wing Valve Block Hydraulic Fluid Leak onto Exhaust — Fire Risk
On approximately 194 second-generation Ford GT vehicles in North America (176 in the United States, 18 in Canada) built December 20, 2016 through July 31, 2018, a seal failure in the rear wing valve block may result in leakage of hydraulic fluid onto the exhaust. The hydraulic active rear wing on the 2nd-gen GT uses a valve block assembly located underneath the rear wing — directly above the exhaust system for the 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6. Excessive pressure in the hydraulic system can blow out O-rings in the valve block, allowing hydraulic fluid to leak onto hot exhaust components. A hydraulic fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source can ignite and cause a vehicle fire. Ford is aware of one vehicle fire that occurred in Germany on June 16, 2018 with no injuries — the GT was a total loss with only 43 miles on the odometer. Ford built a brand new GT for the German owner with the same specifications. The component responsible was introduced in late December 2016, and the condition was remedied on all vehicles produced after July 31, 2018. All prior generation Ford GT vehicles (2005-2006) are unaffected by this recall.
Dealers perform a software update to the fully integrated vehicle controller, which eliminates the possibility of excessive pressure in the valve block assembly. Some vehicles will have a rear wing hydraulic check valve installed and will have the O-rings and the filter replaced if needed. All work is performed free of charge. Recall began November 26, 2018.

Re-Recall — Incorrect Software2017 GT (specific VINs only)Ford Safety Recall (18S29 Re-Recall)
Two 2017 GT Vehicles Did Not Receive Correct Software Update from 18S29
After the original 18S29 recall remediation in late 2018, Ford identified that a small number of vehicles did not receive the correct software update for the fully integrated vehicle controller. Two of these vehicles were produced to United States-market specifications, with production dates of August 11, 2017 and October 4, 2017. These specific 2017 Ford GT vehicles required a re-recall to apply the correct software package and verify the rear wing valve block remediation hardware. The autoevolution report from July 2025 documented this re-recall as a follow-up correction to the original 18S29 campaign. Owners of any 2017 GT built in this date window (or who completed 18S29 in 2018-2019) should verify their VIN against the re-recall population to confirm correct remediation.
Affected vehicles receive the correct software package for the fully integrated vehicle controller, plus verification that the rear wing hydraulic check valve, O-rings, and filter were properly installed. All work is performed free of charge.

Collector-Grade Service ImportanceAll GT generationsLong-Term Storage Awareness
Why Low-Mileage Collector GTs Still Need Recall Service Performed
Ford GT vehicles — especially first-generation 2005-2006 examples that often sit in climate-controlled collections with single-digit annual mileage — are nonetheless subject to time-based degradation that does not correlate with vehicle use. The Takata ammonium nitrate propellant degrades through repeated humidity and temperature cycling whether the vehicle is driven or not. A vehicle parked in a humid garage on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for 15 years experiences just as much propellant degradation as a daily-driven vehicle. Recall completion is mandatory for collector vehicles regardless of mileage. Astro Ford can arrange mobile recall service or transport for high-value GT vehicles where standard dealer service drop-off is not practical. Free interim loaner vehicles are available. The original 1st-gen GT was Ford's 100th anniversary halo vehicle (Ford Motor Company founded 1903) and built at Wixom Assembly Plant in Michigan; the 2nd-gen GT was contract-built by Multimatic in Markham, Ontario, Canada and Ford has emphasized that all 2nd-gen GT recalls remain Ford's warranty responsibility despite the contract manufacturing arrangement.
Astro Ford service department can coordinate mobile recall service, vehicle transport for collector-grade GTs, and free interim loaner vehicles. Always run your specific VIN at NHTSA.gov before any prolonged storage period or change of ownership.

VIN Verification CriticalAll GT model yearsOwnership Transfer Best Practice
Ford GT Sales History and Ownership Transfer — Why VIN Verification Matters Especially for This Model
The Ford GT is one of the most actively traded high-value collector vehicles in the U.S. market, with multiple ownership transfers common during the 1st-gen vehicle's lifetime. Ford initially required 2nd-gen buyers to sign agreements not to resell the vehicle for 24 months after delivery (some buyers were sued by Ford for early flips). At each ownership change, recall completion status may not transfer cleanly with the vehicle — new owners frequently inherit incomplete recall remediation history. VIN verification at NHTSA.gov is essential before purchase, after purchase, and at any insurance/registration renewal. The Astro Ford service department can verify recall completion history for any Ford GT VIN and coordinate any outstanding recall service. The 1st-gen GT (2005-2006) is approximately 20 years old in 2026, putting it well within the Takata propellant degradation high-risk window for the Mississippi Gulf Coast climate — even if the vehicle has been kept in climate-controlled storage.
Astro Ford can run VIN-specific recall verification, schedule outstanding recall service (including the Takata DO-NOT-DRIVE advisory), and arrange transport/mobile service for collector-grade vehicles. Free of charge regardless of vehicle age, mileage, ownership history, or original point of purchase.

GT Recall FAQs

Common questions about Ford F-150 recalls, your rights as an owner, and what to do next.

How do I check if my GT has an open recall?

The fastest and most accurate method is to enter your 17-character VIN into the checker at the top of this page, which queries the NHTSA database in real time. You can also check directly at nhtsa.gov/recalls or Ford's own recall tool at ford.com/support/recalls-details.

Your VIN is found on the lower left corner of your windshield (visible from outside), on your driver's door jamb sticker, or on your registration and insurance documents.

Are Ford GT recall repairs free?

Yes — all safety, compliance, and emissions recalls are repaired at no cost to you. Parts and labor are covered by Ford through any authorized Ford dealership, regardless of whether you are the original owner or purchased the truck used.

If you previously paid out of pocket to fix an issue that was later tied to a recall, you may be eligible for a refund. Ask your Ford dealer or contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 for reimbursement details.

Do Ford GT recalls ever expire?

Safety, compliance, and emissions recalls do not expire. Ford is required by federal law to repair these defects free of charge regardless of the vehicle's age or mileage, and regardless of how many owners the truck has had.

Customer Satisfaction Programs (which are separate from safety recalls) may have time and mileage limitations. If you are unsure whether something is a safety recall or a CSP, ask your dealer or check NHTSA.gov — only official safety recalls appear in the NHTSA database.

Can I still drive my GT if it has an open recall?

It depends on the severity. Most recalls allow you to continue driving while awaiting a repair appointment — the risk is present but not immediate. However, some recalls carry a "Do Not Drive" or "Park It Outside" warning from NHTSA, meaning the vehicle poses an immediate safety risk and should not be operated until repaired.

Always read the full recall description for your specific truck. If in doubt, contact Astro Ford or Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 for guidance specific to your VIN.

How will I be notified about a recall?

Ford is required by law to mail notification letters to all registered owners of affected vehicles once a recall is announced and VINs are confirmed. These letters identify the defect, the safety risk, and instructions for getting the repair done.

You can also proactively sign up for alerts through the free NHTSA SaferCar app or via Ford's recall notification sign-up. Because mailing lists depend on vehicle registration, used truck buyers may not always receive letters — this is why checking your VIN directly is important.

Which GT model years have the most recalls?

Based on NHTSA data, the Ford GT has fewer total recalls than mainstream Ford vehicles due to its low production volume (approximately 4,038 first-generation units 2005–2006 plus 1,350 second-generation units 2017–2022, total ~5,388 lifetime).

The most urgent issue is the active Takata airbag DO-NOT-DRIVE advisory affecting 2005–2006 first-generation Ford GT vehicles equipped with non-desiccated Takata ammonium nitrate airbag inflators (recalls 15S21, 17S42, 19S01). NHTSA has confirmed 27 deaths and 400+ injuries linked to Takata airbags. Customers should NOT drive 2005–2006 GT vehicles with open Takata recalls until the airbag inflators have been replaced.

Recall 21S05 separately covers 2005–2006 GT vehicles where dealerships may have installed obsolete Takata replacement inflators during prior collision or theft repairs (approximately 154,000 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles affected). The 18S29 (NHTSA 18V-707) recall covers 176 U.S. examples of the 2017–2018 second-generation Ford GT for rear wing valve block hydraulic fluid leak onto exhaust fire risk — one fire occurred in Germany on June 16, 2018 with no injuries.

A 18S29 re-recall covered two specific 2017 U.S.-spec GTs (build dates August 11, 2017 and October 4, 2017) that did not receive the correct software update during the original remediation. All prior-generation 2005–2006 GTs are unaffected by 18S29 (it is 2nd-generation only).

Critically, low-mileage collector-grade GT vehicles still require recall completion regardless of how often the vehicle is driven — Takata propellant degrades through humidity and temperature cycling whether the vehicle is in active use or static storage. Astro Ford can arrange mobile recall service, vehicle transport, and free interim loaner vehicles for high-value collector GTs. Always run your specific VIN at NHTSA.gov.

What's the difference between a recall and a Customer Satisfaction Program?

A safety recall is a federally mandated action where Ford must fix a confirmed safety defect at no cost, with no expiration date. These are filed with NHTSA and appear in the official recall database.

A Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP) is a voluntary Ford initiative to address quality issues that do not rise to the level of a federal safety recall. CSPs often have expiration dates and mileage limits, and they do not appear on NHTSA.gov. Your Ford dealer can check your VIN for any open CSPs when you bring your truck in for service.

How long does a recall repair take at the dealership?

It varies widely by the nature of the recall. A simple software update — whether dealer-applied or delivered over the air — can often be completed in under an hour. More involved repairs like replacing a brake booster, rear axle assemblies, or engine components may require several hours or a parts order if inventory is limited.

When you schedule your recall appointment at Astro Ford, our service team can give you an estimated completion time based on the specific recall and parts availability.

Can a recall affect my GT's resale value?

An open, unrepaired recall can negatively affect resale value, and in some states dealers are legally prohibited from selling a vehicle with an unrepaired safety recall. Getting recalls repaired promptly — and keeping documentation — actually protects your truck's value.

A completed recall has no negative impact on resale value, and in many cases demonstrates that the vehicle has been properly maintained. Always provide recall repair documentation when selling your F-150.

Does Astro Ford handle recall repairs?

Yes. As an authorized Ford dealership, Astro Ford performs all Ford safety recall repairs at no charge to you, using genuine Ford parts and factory-trained technicians. You do not need to have purchased your truck from us — any Ford dealer can complete your recall repair.

Call us or schedule your recall appointment online and mention your recall campaign number when booking. Our service team will verify your VIN and confirm parts availability before your visit.
