Notable E-Series Recalls to Know

Significant recalls affecting Ford E-Series owners across the cutaway and stripped chassis platforms (E-350 and E-450) — covering power steering fluid loss, fuel tank weld seam corrosion (also affecting F-59 commercial chassis), engine cover excessive heat (a re-recall of an unfixed prior issue), HVAC blower motor defrost inoperative, backup alarm connector security, fuel pump circuit wiring harness damage, and safety certification label compliance. Verified from NHTSA Part 573 reports, Ford safety bulletins, and reputable industry sources. Fleet operators, RV upfitters, and ambulance/bus operators are encouraged to schedule batch recall service. Always check your specific VIN above; not all vehicles in a model year are affected.

Steering / Brake RiskE-350 / E-450 (2022 recall)Ford Safety Recall (Power Steering Fluid)
Sudden Loss of Power Steering Fluid — Loss of Power Steering and Power Brake Assist
In February 2022, Ford recalled approximately 44,219 E-350 and E-450 vehicles for a defect that can cause a sudden loss of power steering fluid. Loss of power steering fluid can result in loss of power steering assist and loss of power brake assist, increasing the risk of a crash — particularly serious for the heavily-loaded cutaway, ambulance, RV, and school bus applications the E-Series is used for. Drivers may notice steering effort suddenly increase or brake pedal feel become harder before the failure occurs.
Dealers inspect the power steering system and repair the source of the leak as necessary, free of charge. Additional steering fluid is added if needed.

Fire / Fuel Leak Risk2022–2023 E-350/E-450 / 2021–2022 F-59Ford Safety Recall 22S76
Fuel Tank Weld Seam Paint May Peel and Corrode — Fuel Leak Risk
On approximately 11,074 vehicles — including 8,661 examples of the 2022-2023 E-350 and E-450 plus 2,413 examples of the 2021-2022 F-59 commercial stripped chassis — the paint along the fuel tank weld seam may peel and lead to corrosion of the exposed metal, which can result in a fuel leak. Ford traced the issue to pre- and post-paint production deviations at the supplier (Spectra Premium Mobility Solutions Canada Ltd.). The recall covers both the 40-gallon and 55-gallon fuel tank options on E-Series. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire — particularly serious for fuel tanks that hold up to 55 gallons (208 liters) of gasoline.
Dealers inspect the fuel tank and replace it if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters mailed January 23, 2023.

Burn Risk2021–2025 Econoline (re-recall)Ford Safety Recall (Engine Cover Heat / 24B27)
Engine Cover May Become Excessively Hot — Risk of Passenger Burns
In November 2025, Ford recalled approximately 7,046 Econoline trucks and vans because the engine cover, which is partially located between the front seats and is insulated to prevent burns, may become excessively hot due to faulty heat management software. The Econoline (E-Series) uses the 7.3L Godzilla naturally aspirated V8 in its current production. These vehicles were already recalled over the same issue in January 2020 but were not properly fixed for some VINs — this is a "fix the fix" correction recall covering vehicles where the prior remedy was not completed. Modifications such as Stationary Elevated Idle Control or Battery Charge Protect can further increase engine cover surface temperatures. The recall covers 2021-2025 model year Econoline vehicles equipped with the 6.8L or 7.3L gasoline engine.
Dealers update the powertrain control module software (24B27 S2/S3 family) for improved heat management. Engine cover insulation patches were also installed in vehicles with gaps between the insulation and rubber seal during the original 2020 recall. Owner notification letters mailed January 5-9, 2026.

Visibility Risk2026 Econoline (E-350/E-450)Ford Safety Recall 25SB4
HVAC Blower Motor May Fail — Inoperative Defrosting System
On approximately 6,909 Ford Econoline (E-350 and E-450) vehicles built between April 1, 2025 and June 5, 2025, the HVAC blower motor may fail, resulting in an inoperative defrosting system. Loss of the ability to control the defrost or defog function reduces the driver's visibility under certain driving conditions, increasing the risk of a crash. This is particularly important for fleet vehicles operating in cold and humid Gulf Coast conditions where windshield defogging is essential.
Dealers replace the HVAC blower motor assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters anticipated to begin November 3, 2025; final remedy letters anticipated February 2026.

Crash Risk — Backover2026–2027 E-350/E-450Ford Safety Recall 26S12
Backup Alarm Connector May Become Loose — Alarm Fails to Sound
On approximately 316 Ford E-350 and E-450 vehicles built for model years 2026-2027, the backup alarm connector may become loose and detach, preventing the alarm from sounding when the vehicle is backing up. A backup alarm that fails to alert pedestrians and other vehicles of a reversing vehicle increases the risk of a crash or injury — particularly significant for the E-Series cutaway and chassis cab applications used as service trucks, ambulances, delivery vehicles, and shuttle buses where backing operations are frequent and pedestrians are often nearby.
Dealers replace the exterior sound connector on the frame wiring harness, free of charge. Owner notification letters mailed March 9, 2026.

Engine Stall / ABS RiskE-350 / E-450 (2020 recall)Ford Safety Recall (Fuel Pump Wiring)
Fuel Pump Circuit Wiring Harness May Be Damaged — Engine Stall and Loss of ABS/RSC Functionality
In April 2020, Ford recalled approximately 2,871 E-350 and E-450 vehicles due to damage to the fuel pump circuit in the wiring harness. Damaged wiring can result in an unexpected engine stall while driving. Damage to the anti-lock braking system (ABS) wiring in the same area can also lead to reduced ABS functionality and loss of Roll Stability Control (RSC) functionality — particularly serious for the higher-center-of-gravity cutaway, RV, and ambulance applications the E-Series is built for. Engine stall combined with degraded ABS and RSC substantially increases the risk of a crash.
Dealers inspect the wire harness for damage. If no damage is found, anti-abrasion tape is applied and clearance to surrounding components is verified. If damage is found, new wire is spliced in plus anti-abrasion tape and clearance verification. All work is performed free of charge.

Compliance — FMVSS 110/1202016 E-Series (and others)Ford Safety Recall 22C09
Safety Certification Label May Be Missing Tire and Rim Specifications
On certain 2016 Ford E-Series vehicles (along with 2017 and 2019 F-450, 2021 F-350, and 2021 Transit vehicles that received a reprinted label), the safety certification label is missing tire size, rim type, and tire pressure values for both the front and rear axles. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 110 "Tire Selection and Rim" and 120 "Wheels and Rims-Other Than Passenger Cars." Without the correct label, owners and tire shops cannot verify proper tire and wheel specifications, which is particularly important for heavy-duty cutaway and chassis applications where load ratings are critical.
Dealers replace the safety certification label with one that includes the required tire and rim specifications, free of charge. Owner notification letters mailed July 6, 2022.

E-Series Recall FAQs

Common questions about Ford F-150 recalls, your rights as an owner, and what to do next.

How do I check if my E-Series has an open recall?

The fastest and most accurate method is to enter your 17-character VIN into the checker at the top of this page, which queries the NHTSA database in real time. You can also check directly at nhtsa.gov/recalls or Ford's own recall tool at ford.com/support/recalls-details.

Your VIN is found on the lower left corner of your windshield (visible from outside), on your driver's door jamb sticker, or on your registration and insurance documents.

Are Ford E-Series recall repairs free?

Yes — all safety, compliance, and emissions recalls are repaired at no cost to you. Parts and labor are covered by Ford through any authorized Ford dealership, regardless of whether you are the original owner or purchased the truck used.

If you previously paid out of pocket to fix an issue that was later tied to a recall, you may be eligible for a refund. Ask your Ford dealer or contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 for reimbursement details.

Do Ford E-Series recalls ever expire?

Safety, compliance, and emissions recalls do not expire. Ford is required by federal law to repair these defects free of charge regardless of the vehicle's age or mileage, and regardless of how many owners the truck has had.

Customer Satisfaction Programs (which are separate from safety recalls) may have time and mileage limitations. If you are unsure whether something is a safety recall or a CSP, ask your dealer or check NHTSA.gov — only official safety recalls appear in the NHTSA database.

Can I still drive my E-Series if it has an open recall?

It depends on the severity. Most recalls allow you to continue driving while awaiting a repair appointment — the risk is present but not immediate. However, some recalls carry a "Do Not Drive" or "Park It Outside" warning from NHTSA, meaning the vehicle poses an immediate safety risk and should not be operated until repaired.

Always read the full recall description for your specific truck. If in doubt, contact Astro Ford or Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 for guidance specific to your VIN.

How will I be notified about a recall?

Ford is required by law to mail notification letters to all registered owners of affected vehicles once a recall is announced and VINs are confirmed. These letters identify the defect, the safety risk, and instructions for getting the repair done.

You can also proactively sign up for alerts through the free NHTSA SaferCar app or via Ford's recall notification sign-up. Because mailing lists depend on vehicle registration, used truck buyers may not always receive letters — this is why checking your VIN directly is important.

Which E-Series model years have the most recalls?

Based on NHTSA data, the most significant recent E-Series recall is the 2022 power steering fluid loss recall affecting approximately 44,219 E-350 and E-450 vehicles, which carries loss of power steering and power brake assist risk. The 2022–2023 E-350/E-450 plus 2021–2022 F-59 are covered by the 22S76 fuel tank weld seam paint peel and corrosion fuel leak recall (~11,074 vehicles total).

The 2021–2025 Econoline equipped with the 6.8L or 7.3L gasoline engine is covered by the November 2025 engine cover excessive heat re-recall (7,046 vehicles previously recalled in January 2020 but not properly fixed). The 2026 Econoline is covered by the 25SB4 HVAC blower motor / inoperative defrosting recall (~6,909 vehicles built April-June 2025).

The 2026–2027 E-350/E-450 is covered by the 26S12 backup alarm connector recall (316 vehicles, March 2026 NEW). The 2016 E-Series is covered by the 22C09 safety certification label recall. Older 2017–2019 Econoline vehicles are part of the broader 25S89 rearview camera recall covering many older Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

The Ford E-Series for North America is built at the Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake with the 7.3L Godzilla naturally aspirated V8 standard since the passenger and cargo van variants were retired after 2014. Fleet operators, RV upfitters, and ambulance/school bus operators with multiple E-Series vehicles should run batch VIN checks at NHTSA.gov.

What's the difference between a recall and a Customer Satisfaction Program?

A safety recall is a federally mandated action where Ford must fix a confirmed safety defect at no cost, with no expiration date. These are filed with NHTSA and appear in the official recall database.

A Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP) is a voluntary Ford initiative to address quality issues that do not rise to the level of a federal safety recall. CSPs often have expiration dates and mileage limits, and they do not appear on NHTSA.gov. Your Ford dealer can check your VIN for any open CSPs when you bring your truck in for service.

How long does a recall repair take at the dealership?

It varies widely by the nature of the recall. A simple software update — whether dealer-applied or delivered over the air — can often be completed in under an hour. More involved repairs like replacing a brake booster, rear axle assemblies, or engine components may require several hours or a parts order if inventory is limited.

When you schedule your recall appointment at Astro Ford, our service team can give you an estimated completion time based on the specific recall and parts availability.

Can a recall affect my E-Series's resale value?

An open, unrepaired recall can negatively affect resale value, and in some states dealers are legally prohibited from selling a vehicle with an unrepaired safety recall. Getting recalls repaired promptly — and keeping documentation — actually protects your truck's value.

A completed recall has no negative impact on resale value, and in many cases demonstrates that the vehicle has been properly maintained. Always provide recall repair documentation when selling your F-150.
