How Flex Maintenance Has Changed

2010

2009

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often should I change the oil on a Ford Flex?
The Flex EcoBoost V6 requires full synthetic SAE 5W-30 at 7,500 to 10,000-mile intervals per the IOLM. The naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 can use synthetic blend at similar intervals. All Flex engines benefit from consistent synthetic oil use for optimal longevity.
  • When should the PTU be inspected on an AWD Flex?
The Power Transfer Unit on AWD Flex models should have fluid inspected at 60,000 miles. The Flex shares its PTU with the Taurus and Explorer of the same era, and PTU seal leaks are a known concern. Catching low fluid early prevents expensive unit replacement.
  • What maintenance does the Flex EcoBoost need beyond the standard V6?
The EcoBoost Flex requires full synthetic oil (the NA V6 does not strictly require it), benefits from periodic intercooler condensation purging in humid climates, and should use premium fuel for optimal performance. Turbocharger longevity is maximized by allowing a brief idle cool-down after sustained highway driving.
  • How often should the transmission fluid be changed?
The 6-speed automatic in the Flex is considered a sealed unit under normal conditions with inspection at 150,000 miles. AWD models with frequent towing or heavy-load use should have the fluid inspected earlier at 60,000 miles. Use only Ford-specified Mercon LV fluid.
