Frequently Asked Questions
- How often should I change the oil on a Ford Explorer?Modern Explorers (2011+) use the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor to track oil condition based on driving habits. Typical intervals are 7,500 to 10,000 miles with full synthetic oil. The 2.3L EcoBoost and 3.0L EcoBoost both require SAE 5W-30 full synthetic. Older V6 and V8 Explorers (2002-2010) typically follow 5,000 to 7,500-mile intervals.
- Does the Explorer ST have different maintenance requirements? The Explorer ST uses the twin-turbo 3.0L EcoBoost V6 tuned to 400 hp. While basic maintenance intervals are the same, the ST has sport-tuned suspension components and performance brakes that may wear differently under aggressive driving. Ford recommends the same oil and filter intervals but suggests more frequent brake inspections for ST owners who drive spiritedly.
- When should the timing chain be inspected on a Ford Explorer? The 4.0L SOHC V6 (2002-2010 Explorers) is notorious for timing chain guide and tensioner failures, sometimes as early as 45,000 miles. Listen for a ticking or rattling noise on cold starts. The EcoBoost engines (2011+) use more durable timing components and do not have the same issue, though Ford still recommends inspection if unusual noises develop.
- What coolant does the Ford Explorer use?The 6th-generation Explorer (2020+) uses Motorcraft Orange Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant with a first replacement at 100,000 miles. The 5th generation (2011-2019) uses the same orange coolant. Earlier Explorers (2002-2010) used gold or green coolant depending on year — never mix coolant colors as it causes cooling system damage.
