Taurus X Replaces Freestyle Generation
The Freestyle was renamed Taurus X with a significant powertrain upgrade: 3.5L Duratec V6 (263 hp) replaced the 3.0L, and a conventional 6-speed automatic replaced the CVT. FWD or AWD available. Three-row seating continued.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How often should I change the oil on a Ford Taurus X?The Taurus X 3.5L Duratec V6 uses conventional or synthetic blend SAE 5W-20 oil at 5,000 to 7,500-mile intervals. Synthetic oil provides better protection and can safely extend the interval toward the longer end.
- Is Taurus X maintenance different from the Freestyle? The biggest difference is the transmission. The Taurus X uses a conventional 6-speed automatic instead of the Freestyle CVT, which simplifies transmission maintenance. Oil change intervals and general service items are similar, but the 3.5L V6 has a slightly larger oil capacity than the Freestyle 3.0L.
- When should the transmission fluid be changed? The 6-speed automatic in the Taurus X should have fluid changed every 60,000 miles for optimal longevity. Use Ford-specified Mercon V ATF. This is more straightforward than the Freestyle CVT fluid service and uses more widely available fluid.
- What replaced the Taurus X?The Taurus X was discontinued after 2009 and effectively replaced by the Ford Flex (2009-2019), which offered a similar three-row crossover layout but with more distinctive styling and available EcoBoost power.
