Frequently Asked Questions
- How often should I change the oil on a Ford Freestyle? The Freestyle 3.0L Duratec V6 uses conventional or synthetic blend SAE 5W-20 oil at 5,000 to 7,500-mile intervals. Synthetic oil extends the interval and provides better protection for the high-revving CVT-paired engine.
- Does the Freestyle CVT need maintenance? The Ford/Aisin CVT in the Freestyle should have fluid changed every 60,000 miles for optimal longevity. Unlike some sealed transmissions, the Freestyle CVT benefits from proactive fluid maintenance. Use only Ford-specified CVT fluid as conventional ATF will damage the unit.
- What became of the Freestyle after 2007?The Ford Freestyle was renamed the Taurus X for 2008-2009 with a more powerful 3.5L Duratec V6 replacing the 3.0L and a conventional 6-speed automatic replacing the CVT. The Taurus X was then discontinued after 2009 and replaced by the Flex.
- What are common Freestyle maintenance concerns? The most common Freestyle concerns involve the CVT transmission, which can develop shuddering or slipping if fluid is not maintained. The 3.0L V6 is generally reliable with standard maintenance. Power steering pump leaks and wheel bearing wear are also reported on higher-mileage examples.
