Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often should I change the oil on a Ford F-450?
The F-450 shares its powertrain with the F-250 and F-350. Diesel models follow 7,500 to 10,000-mile intervals with full synthetic oil. The 6.7L Power Stroke uses approximately 13-15 quarts per oil change. Commercial fleet F-450s with high idle time or heavy-duty cycles should follow the severe-duty schedule.
  • Does the F-450 chassis cab have different maintenance?
The engine and transmission maintenance is identical between F-450 pickup and chassis cab configurations. Chassis cab models with commercial upfits (flatbeds, service bodies, dump bodies) may require additional inspections of the upfit mounting hardware, PTO systems, and auxiliary equipment at regular intervals.
  • When should the DEF system be serviced on an F-450 diesel?
The Diesel Exhaust Fluid system on 2011+ F-450 models requires regular DEF refills (consumption varies by driving conditions) and periodic inspection of the DEF injector, lines, and tank heater. The DEF filter should be replaced as indicated by the powertrain control module. Running out of DEF triggers a progressive speed limitation.
  • What differential fluid does the F-450 use?
The F-450 uses a heavy-duty rear axle with higher-capacity differential fluid. Ford recommends the same inspection intervals as the F-250/F-350 (150,000 miles normal, 60,000 miles severe duty). However, F-450 models used for consistent heavy towing should lean toward the severe-duty interval. The Dana rear axle uses Ford-specified synthetic gear oil.
