What Happened — and How It's Fixed

On approximately 499,129 Ford Edge (2015–2018) and Lincoln MKX (2016–2018) vehicles, the rear brake jounce hose may rupture and leak brake fluid. A brake fluid leak extends the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24-027 in October 2024 after reports of sudden, total loss of braking with the brake pedal dropping to the floor and brake fluid leaks near the rear tires, sometimes without prior warning lights. NHTSA identified 64 consumer complaints including two crashes related to brake loss. Ford reports 64 warranty claims, 3 field reports, 16 customer complaints, and estimates roughly 1 percent of recalled vehicles have defective hoses. The hoses were swapped to a different braid material (PVA to PET) by December 2017; vehicles built after that change are not affected. Drivers may notice longer brake pedal travel, harder pedal feel, and a red brake warning light.

Remedy is currently under development. Dealers will replace the brake jounce hoses and adjust hoses with no damage as needed, free of charge. Interim notification letters mailed September 8–12, 2025; final remedy letters anticipated April 2026.

NHTSA 20V-469000 · 2015–2018 · SERVICE BRAKES
On certain 2015–2018 Ford Edge and 2016–2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles, the front brake hoses may rupture prematurely due to cyclic fatigue in the internal reinforcement braid caused by tensile and torsional stresses during suspension and steering articulation. A ruptured front brake hose causes a brake fluid leak, lengthening stopping distance and increasing the risk of a crash. This 2020 campaign was the predecessor to the current rear-hose recall (25S87) and used the same root cause. The new front brake hoses installed under this recall use a revised braid material.

Dealers replaced the front brake hoses with new hoses using a revised braid material, free of charge. Owner notification letters mailed May 13, 2021. If your Edge had this recall completed but you are now experiencing rear brake symptoms, the rear hoses are covered under separate recall 25S87 (above).

NHTSA 16V-733000 · 2015–2016 · SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured February 9, 2015, to August 12, 2016. During dealer servicing, the affected vehicles may be have been updated with incorrect Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software. This software can cause the ESC system to lose engine torque control, and not provide any warning lamps to warn the driver if there was an ABS or ESC system malfunction. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems" and number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."
If the operator is not warned of an ABS or ESC malfunction and the ESC loses engine torque control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS module, and update the service software, free of charge. The recall begin November 22, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16C14.
