What Happened — and How It's Fixed

The Defect

On certain 2018–2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles built April 3, 2017 to October 12, 2021 and equipped with the 1.0L Fox EcoBoost three-cylinder engine and 6F15 automatic transmission (along with 2016–2018 Ford Focus built March 24, 2015 to May 4, 2018), the engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm may fracture or separate from the tensioner backing plate, and/or the oil pump drive belt material may degrade and lose teeth, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure. The 1.0L Fox EcoBoost uses an unusual wet-belt-in-oil oil pump drive design where the toothed belt runs in the engine oil — when the belt deteriorates, debris can clog the oil pickup screen leading to oil starvation, engine damage, and engine seizure. Loss of engine oil pressure can result in engine damage and/or seizure, loss of motive power, and loss of the mechanical vacuum pump required to provide power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash. The instrument cluster will display a low-oil-pressure warning message and may also display a check engine light. Drivers may hear loud noises from the engine, and continuing to drive after the warning may result in further power reduction or full engine failure. NHTSA opened an investigation in September 2023 after multiple reports of engine failures.

The Risk

A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Free Fix

Dealers replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt with redesigned parts, free of charge. If engine failure has already occurred due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the entire engine assembly (long block engine and turbocharger) as an interim repair before the availability of final remedy parts — this is free of charge including parts and labor. Eligible owners can also receive rental vehicle reimbursement during the long repair window. Owner notification letters mailed August 11, 2025. Final remedy parts began availability Q1 2025.
