What Happened — and How It's Fixed
On approximately 32,160 Ford E-Transit vehicles built between February 26, 2021 and September 11, 2025 at the Kansas City Assembly Plant, the left rear axle half shaft may not have been fully inserted into the Primary Drive Unit (PDU) at the time of vehicle assembly due to insufficient insertion force and retention check force production controls. Drivers may observe a seal leak from the rear left-hand axle shaft caused by excessive relative movement between the seal and halfshaft. If the half shaft partially disengages from the PDU during operation, the vehicle can experience a loss of motive drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. A half shaft that is not fully engaged to the PDU can also result in a vehicle rollaway if the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is not applied. Ford was aware of four warranty claims related to this problem, filed between August 13, 2024 and July 29, 2025, but no reports of accidents or injuries. Ford estimates approximately 5 percent of recalled vehicles actually have the defect.
A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash. In addition, a half shaft that is not fully engaged to the primary drive unit can result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
The remedy is under development as of late 2025. Interim notification letters mailed December 22-26, 2025; final remedy letters anticipated March 23-27, 2026. Affected VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov on December 15, 2025.
