What Do I Need to Buy a Car? Document Checklist | Astro Ford
Before You Come In · D'Iberville, MS

Missing paperwork rarely causes a decline. It causes delay — and delay is where deals die.

The vehicle sells to someone else, the approval expires, life gets in the way. Arriving with everything turns three visits into one. Here is the list, and what a lender does with each item.

Everyone brings these

The five essentials

Each one answers a specific question an underwriter has to resolve before approving anything.

Valid driver’s licenseIdentity and legal ability to drive

Current, not expired. It verifies you are who the credit file belongs to, and it is a legal requirement for the test drive. An expired licence stops a deal cold, and it is the most common single reason someone has to come back.

Proof of incomeCapacity to pay

Recent pay stubs for most people. The underwriter uses this to calculate what share of your income the payment would consume. If your income is tipped, overtime-heavy, 1099, military, or fixed, the right document is different — and bringing the wrong one gets you underwritten for less than you earn.

Proof of residenceStability, and where to find you

A utility bill or lease in your name at your current address. Time at an address is read as stability. It also has to match your application — a mismatch triggers verification calls that add days.

Proof of insuranceLegal delivery of the vehicle

A card or your agent’s phone number. You cannot drive away uninsured, and the lender requires coverage on collateral it holds. If you are adding a vehicle to an existing policy, having the agent reachable saves a trip.

ReferencesContactability

Several people who do not live with you, with working phone numbers. Sub-prime lenders in particular ask for these. Have the numbers with you rather than trying to remember them at the desk.

If you are trading something in

Four more things, and one that surprises people

The title

If the vehicle is paid off. No title, no trade — and if it is lost, replacing it through the state takes time you would rather not add to the deal.

Your payoff amount

If you still owe. Call your lender for the exact figure including any per-day interest. An estimate is not enough to structure a deal around.

Current registration

Confirms the vehicle is legally yours to trade and that registration is current.

Both keys and the manuals

The one that surprises people. A missing second key measurably reduces what a vehicle appraises for, because replacing a modern key is not cheap.

Depending on how you get paid

Your income decides your paperwork

This is where most avoidable delay comes from — not a missing licence, but the wrong income document.

Hourly or salaried W-2Straightforward

Your most recent pay stubs. If overtime is a meaningful part of your income, bring enough to establish a pattern rather than just the latest one.

TippedCasino and hospitality

Pay stubs showing reported tips, several months of bank statements, or last year’s return. A base-wage-only stub gets you underwritten on base wage alone.

Self-employed or 1099Contractors and owner-operators

Bank statements, 1099s, a recent tax return, or a profit and loss statement. Expect to be qualified on net income after deductions rather than gross receipts.

Active-duty militaryKeesler AFB, NCBC Gulfport

Your most recent LES. Bring orders as well if a PCS is coming, because it affects how the deal should be structured.

Fixed incomeRetirement, disability, VA

Your award or benefit letter, or bank statements showing the recurring deposit. A 1099-R works for pension distributions.

Get the paperwork question answered first

Pre-qualify, then bring the right documents

Soft inquiry, no score impact. Tell us your income type and we will tell you exactly which documents yours needs.

Soft inquiry only. This does not affect your credit score and is not a commitment to lend.

Less common, still worth knowing

A few situations that need one extra document

Open Chapter 13

Trustee permission to take on new debt. This is procedural rather than credit-related, and it is the single most common reason a Chapter 13 deal stalls at the last step.

Recent job change

Stubs from your previous employer alongside the new ones. It establishes continuity of income, which is what the underwriter is actually measuring.

Name change

Documentation of the change, so your ID matches the name on your credit file. Without it, the file may not resolve to you at all.

Questions about what to bring

A valid driver’s licence, proof of income, proof of residence, proof of insurance, and several references who do not live with you. If you are trading a vehicle, add the title or your payoff amount, the registration, and both keys. If your income is tipped, self-employed, military, or fixed, the income document is specific to your type.

For most people, recent pay stubs. Tipped income needs stubs showing reported tips, bank statements, or a tax return. Self-employed income needs 1099s, bank statements, or returns. Military income uses your LES. Fixed income uses an award or benefit letter. Bringing the wrong one usually means being underwritten for less than you actually earn.

A utility bill or lease in your name showing your current address. It has to match the address on your application — a mismatch triggers verification calls that add days to the process.

You need it before you drive the vehicle away, and the lender requires coverage on collateral it holds. Bring your insurance card or your agent’s phone number. If you are adding to an existing policy, a reachable agent saves a return trip.

It is partly verification and partly a collection tool, and sub-prime lenders ask more often than prime ones. Bring several contacts who do not live with you, with working numbers, rather than trying to recall them at the desk.

Come anyway and tell us what is missing. Some items can be sorted while you are here — a payoff quote, an insurance call. Others need a return trip. Knowing which is which up front is better than discovering it at signing.

It is not required, but a missing second key measurably reduces the appraisal, because replacing a modern key is expensive. If you have both, bring both. Manuals and service records help as well.

Document requirements are set by individual lenders and by state titling and registration rules, and vary by applicant, income type, and vehicle. The lists on this page are general guidance, not a statement of any lender’s requirements.

Pre-qualification uses a soft credit inquiry and does not affect your credit score. Pre-qualification is not a commitment to lend and is not a credit approval. Final approval requires a completed credit application, a hard credit inquiry, and verification of income, residence, and insurance.

Credit approval, annual percentage rate, term, and required down payment are determined by the lender based on creditworthiness, income, the amount financed, and the vehicle selected. Not all applicants will qualify. Rates and terms vary by applicant and are subject to change.

Vehicle availability, pricing, and financing programs are subject to change without notice. See dealer for complete details.
