Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often should I change the oil on a Ford Mustang?
All modern Mustangs (2011+) with the 5.0L Coyote V8 or 2.3L EcoBoost require full synthetic oil. The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor typically calls for changes every 7,500 to 10,000 miles under normal driving. Track use or spirited driving shortens this significantly. The 5.0L uses SAE 5W-20, while the EcoBoost uses SAE 5W-30. Older S197 Mustangs (2005-2010) with the 4.6L V8 also benefit from synthetic oil at 5,000-7,500-mile intervals.
  • Does the Mustang GT have different maintenance than the EcoBoost?
The GT (5.0L V8) and EcoBoost (2.3L turbo-four) share most basic maintenance intervals but differ in oil capacity, oil weight, and specific components. The GT uses approximately 10 quarts of 5W-20, while the EcoBoost uses about 5.7 quarts of 5W-30. The EcoBoost has turbocharger-related maintenance considerations including intercooler inspection and proper cool-down procedures.
  • When should the differential fluid be changed on a Mustang?
Ford recommends inspecting the rear differential fluid at 150,000 miles under normal conditions. Mustangs used for track days, drag racing, or spirited driving should have differential fluid changed every 30,000 miles. Performance models with limited-slip differentials benefit from Ford-specified friction modifier additive at each change.
  • What maintenance does a Shelby GT500 or Dark Horse require beyond standard Mustang service?
High-performance Mustangs have additional maintenance items including supercharger fluid inspection (GT500), upgraded brake pad and rotor inspection due to larger braking systems, and more frequent oil changes when driven at high RPM. The Magnetic Ride Control system (if equipped) requires periodic damper inspection. Ford recommends premium fuel exclusively and shorter oil change intervals for any track use.
