What Happened — and How It's Fixed
On certain 2025–2026 Ford Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles, the Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS) in the front passenger seat may fail to accurately distinguish between an adult and a child. The OCS determines whether and how the front passenger air bag should deploy in a crash. The defect causes vehicles to fail compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." Approximately 3,170 vehicles affected across both models. Affected VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov on April 2, 2026.
Failure to correctly detect a passenger may result in the air bag not deploying as intended, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
