Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often should I change the oil on a Ford Taurus?
The 2010+ Taurus SHO with the 3.5L EcoBoost requires full synthetic SAE 5W-30 oil at 7,500 to 10,000-mile intervals per the IOLM. The naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 (2010-2019) can use synthetic blend. Older Taurus models (2004-2007) with the 3.0L V6 follow 5,000-mile intervals with conventional oil.
  • Does the Taurus SHO need different maintenance?
The SHO twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost has additional maintenance considerations including turbocharger cooling, intercooler inspection, and mandatory full synthetic oil. AWD-equipped SHO models also need PTU fluid inspection. The performance brakes may wear faster under spirited driving.
  • When should the PTU be serviced on an AWD Taurus?
The Power Transfer Unit on AWD Taurus models is a known maintenance item. While Ford considers it sealed, many technicians recommend fluid inspection or change every 60,000 miles. PTU seal leaks are common on 2010-2015 models and should be caught early to avoid unit failure.
  • What coolant does the Ford Taurus use?
The 6th-generation Taurus (2010-2019) uses Motorcraft Orange Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant. Earlier models (2004-2007) use green or gold coolant depending on model year. First coolant replacement is at 100,000 miles for 2010+ models. Never mix coolant types.
