Frequently Asked Questions
- How often should I change the oil on a Ford Expedition? The 4th-generation Expedition (2018+) with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 uses the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor and requires full synthetic SAE 5W-30 oil, typically every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Earlier Expeditions with the 5.4L Triton V8 (2003-2014) follow 5,000 to 7,500-mile intervals and can use synthetic blend or full synthetic oil.
- Is maintenance different for the Expedition MAX?The Expedition MAX (extended-length model) shares the same engine, transmission, and drivetrain as the standard Expedition, so all maintenance intervals are identical. The only difference is the larger body, which means slightly heavier curb weight that may affect brake and tire wear rates under heavy passenger or cargo loads.
- When should the turbocharger be inspected on an EcoBoost Expedition? The twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (2015+) does not have a specific turbocharger service interval, but Ford recommends using quality full synthetic oil to protect the turbo bearings. Listen for unusual whining or whistling noises. Intercooler condensation in humid climates can cause occasional hesitation, which is normal. Most turbocharger issues are prevented by allowing a brief cool-down period after sustained highway driving.
- What coolant does the Ford Expedition use?The 4th-generation Expedition (2018+) uses Motorcraft Orange Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant with first replacement at 100,000 miles. Earlier Expeditions with the 5.4L V8 use gold or green coolant depending on model year. Never mix coolant types, and always verify the correct specification in your owner manual.
